Sleeping Beauty by Charles Perrault (1696): http://acacia.pair.com/Acacia.Vignettes/Happily.Ever.After/Sleeping.Beauty.html
As fairy tales are passed down from generation to generation, they are altered differently. In both of the stories the Queen gives birth to a girl; however, a King is only mentioned in the Perrault version. When it comes time for the christening, in the story by Perrault, seven angels appear bearing gifts and then an eighth angel of darkness appears. This angel of darkness is like the witch fairy in the story by the Brothers Grimm. In both versions, the baby princess is cursed by the evil fairy/angel and will prick her hand on the spindle of a spinning wheel and die. Although it will seem like the princess is dead, she just needs a "man of pure heart to fall in love with her". After hearing that the curse became true with her daughter, the Queen dies in the Brothers Grimm tale. In both stories, the son of a King is riding his horse through the woods when we comes across the palace. However, in the fairytale from 1696, the prince knows that there is a princess who is asleep and needs to be woken up by a prince. In the newer version of Sleeping Beauty, the prince kisses her softly on the hand whereas in the other tale he simply walks into her room and she wakes up without any contact. Finally, they both get married and live happily ever after; although, in Perrault's version, they have two children, a daughter Aurora and a son named Day.

Once upon a time a beautiful baby girl was born into the wealthiest family in all of Georgia. Her parents, whose looks did not compare to the newborn, were the snobbiest realtors around. They had more money than they knew what to do with. Money could be found in the refrigerator, under and in the couch (along with lost diamonds), money was used as bookmarks and more. The day of Eloise-Marie’s birth was a surprise as she was a few weeks early. Her mother, Beatrix, was rushed to the hospital by their chauffeur and within about an hour, Eloise-Marie was born. Since they were the most popular and rich family in Georgia, the news heard about the newborn and paparazzi soon paraded into the hospital. Everyone now knew about Eloise.
For Eloise’s fifth birthday, a massive party was held at their ocean front home a few hours away. There was a live band, a variety of cuisine options and plenty of family and friends. Her aunt/godmother, Agnes, worried about her and had to let her parents know. She felt that when Eloise got to about the age of thirteen, she was going to become very depressed because she was homeschooled and wouldn’t know what it was like to go to a public school. With the depression, Eloise would refuse to play sports and leave the house and she would soon become very obese. Beatrix decided not to believe her sister as first, for Agnes had been known to say bizarre things. A few weeks after the party, Beatrix called up her sister and asked what she should do if Agnes’ worry became true. Agnes replied with, “There will be a birthday party at one of your neighbors homes in a few years. Let Eloise go to it, for this neighbor will be one of Eloise’s best friends. She will meet new girlfriends and perhaps will meet a boy that changes her life for the better.” For the next eight years, Beatrix kept her eye on Eloise.
One day a modeling agency showed up at Eloise’s brick mansion. It was around seven in the morning, yet Eloise had been up since five. She loved watching the sunrise and would do so each morning as she ate her breakfast. This agency had heard all about Eloise from her mother. When Eloise opened the door, she stared wide eyed up at the tall and slender men. Every detail her mother had shared with them about Eloise was true. Her mother said that she was “very petite and had long chestnut brown hair with natural blonde highlights in which framed her face”. She had “dark blue eyes with specks of brown and gold and had a beaming smile, even as an eight year-old”. The company instantly wanted her. Because Eloise had been a ballerina since she was four, the modeling agency was from Joffrey Ballet Company. They brought new leotards, skirts and tights for her to model. They placed her luscious hair into a slicked back high bun and put mascara and sparkly eyeliner on her eyes. After red lipstick was placed onto her thin lips, she was ready to go. This wasn’t the first or last time modeling agencies would show up at her door. After about five years and hours of photo shoots, Eloise became angry with her mother. She hated that everyone only cared about her looks and not her personality. The next time an agency knocked on her door, she slammed the door in their face. She would constantly lash out at her mother and father and refused to do school work and go to ballet class. A lot of her “friends” only kept in touch with her because of her wealth. As Eloise secluded herself from her family and the few friends she had, she started to eat her emotions. She would order her butler to make her the most unhealthy of meals to satisfy her sadness. Beatrix could not believe her sister was right. One day on Eloise’s half birthday, an invitation came in the mail inviting Eloise to a birthday party. She hated the idea because she was so upset with her weight gain; however, with much convincing and some bribing of course, Beatrix convinced her to go.
On the day of the party, Eloise put on her favorite dress which was a pink v-neck with a ballerina pink silk belt. Her brown hair was neatly pulled back into a half ponytail and tied with a ribbon. She put on some makeup and a smile and headed to the party. When she arrived, her neighborhood friends were so excited to see her as she hadn’t left her house in weeks. They complimented her outfit and hair and gave her plenty of hugs, which boosted her spirits some. During the party, as she was walking to get a beverage, she accidentally bumped into a boy and fell to the ground. Her heart instantly started beating and her eyes grew wide as she stared up at his outstretched hand. She grabbed his hand and shyly smiled as her face grew pink with embarrassment. He introduced himself and they instantly clicked. They followed each other around for the rest of the party and before they left, he asked to see her later that week. She agreed, for she hadn’t been this happy in a long time. Once Eloise got home, she ran up into her bedroom, jumped onto her bed and smiled the biggest smile. Finally someone had pay attention to her not just for her looks but for her personality. Eloise and her new boyfriend, Charles, hung out just about each day after school. They truly completed each other. On their seventh date, he kissed her. It was as if she finally woke up and could start her life over in happiness.
