Wallet by Allen Woodman
In this story the writer is making you work for what you want to know by hooking you in the beginning of the story. He does this by saying “ Tired of losing his wallet to pickpockets, my father makes a phony one.” This is making you work for it because it makes you read to see why he is making fake wallets. Like after having that question in my mind it made me want to finish this short story. Also how the writing keeps you hooked into the story and doesn’t lose you or keeps using questions to keep you in the story. Like in this story halfway through the story they keep you hooked by saying “then the unexpected happens.” To me thats a good hook to keep you reading the story because you want to see what the unexpected thing is. This micro fiction use’s a lot of those. There is twist to the story as another way to keep you hooked in the story. Like where the kids dad just runs out of the store and doesn’t get his fake wallet so the cops or the lady that caught the thief with the wallet the didn’t know who’s wallet he or she stole. There is also good description in the story to help you picture what your seeing as you read it to make you want to read more like “It hangs out fat with desire.” “All oyster” “no pearl” Thats is used to say that you would work to get a nice gem out of the mouth of the oyster and work real hard for nothing. So the thief will have to work hard to get nothing or get caught. So back to working for your meal all that description you’ll be working to trying figure out why he is saying that it’s an oyster with no pearl. Because to me it makes want to figure out what the pearl in the story is and that would be the wallet hanging out to the thief later in the story that it would be a pearl but really it’s just an empty wallet but he doesn’t know that.
